Review: The Hunger Games

From the publisher's website:

Twenty- four are forced to enter. Only the winner survives.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Each year, the districts are forced by the Capitol to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal and terrifying fight to the death – televised for all of Panem to see.

Survival is second nature for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12. When Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, she knows it may be her death sentence. If she is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

My Thoughts

I LOVE THIS BOOK. Really. You should read it right now. ... Why are you still here? Seriously, go!

The Hunger Games was a bite-your-nails thriller that kept me up way past my bedtime feverishly turning pages. From the first page, this book completely sucked me in and didn't let go. Katniss's terrifying struggle to survive, and to maintain her sense of self within the competition, makes for completely riveting reading.

16 year old Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games, a yearly event in which 24 young people are thrown together in an arena and forced to kill each other in order to "win." Her fight to live is complicated by her feelings for Peeta, the other competitor from her home district. I fell a little in love with Peeta, I have to admit.

An exciting story from start to finish, this book kept me thinking about it long after I finished the final page. It touches on a lot of issues, from personal morality, to the effects of oppression and societal violence on young people. This is a book I would highly recommend to just about anyone, and I cannot wait for Book 2.

I heard a rumor this book is being made into a movie. I think it would be fantastic, because this story would really lend itself to a screenplay. Does anybody know anything about this?
