The Princess Bride. I actually saw the movie before I ever read the book. My brothers and I had this movie completely memorized. When my mom would finally kick us outside and away from the tv, we would recite it to each other. Yes, we were pathetically addicted, but it was fun. Except I always had to be Buttercup, who has the dumbest lines. I wanted
to be Inigo. Anyway. It turns out the book is great too, full of dry humor. It's an oldie, but well worth reading.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. They managed to take my least favorite of the books (I still love it, though) and turn it into what is so far my favorite of the movies. I thought they did a fabulous job casting the main characters way back when, and now that they're growing up a bit they're even better. And Luna Lovegood was fantastic!
Where the Heart Is. I think this is one of those stories that you either find incredibly touching or incredibly annoying. I love it. How can you not love a story where the main character gives birth in a Wal-mart? Or where a woman names her children after the cravings she had while pregnant with them? Praline!?
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I own the extended DVDs and I have watched all the extra footage. The amount of detail that went into these movies astounds me. I am far from a LOTR buff, but in my mind, the movies really capture the feeling of the b
ooks, if not every single detail. The movies are better! I might get crucified for saying this, but I think the books can be a little draggy here and there. And I LOVE Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. I don't like him in any other movie I've seen him it, but I the "Not This Day" speech in Return of the King gives me chills.
So these are some of my favorites. What do you think? and.. What are yours? Are there any movies done from books that you found particularly good? Do you generally like movies made from your favorite books, or not?

I loved Where the Heart is. It's cheese I know it, she names her kid Americus Nation and she was born in a Walmart- I type that with a southern twang btw.
Don't feel bad, I never wanted to be Buttercup either. I wanted to be the Dread Pirate Roberts. I've read the book and seen the movie more times than I can count and I think I actually perfer the movie over the book, which doesn't happen often.
The LOTR were my bed times stories growing up. In my family new moms get a set of the books and we all grow up on orcs, wizards and elves. Might have alot to do with why we are so twisted. I thought the movie was brilliant. Rivendale, especially looked JUST like I always thought it did.
The Princess Bride and LOTR were done very well as movies. Tolkien is very long-winded, so I actually liked the movies better. My husband says The Watchmen was almost frame for frame exactly like the graphic novel and said they did a good job with that one, too.

I'm horrible, I haven't read any of the LOTR books, but I've seen all the movies.
Where the Heart Is is a great book and movie. I loved the Princess Bride as well, especially Inigo.
1. I love Princess Bride (the movie) and several months ago I found a hard back copy (in mint condition) at one of my local thrift stores. I haven't read it yet but your review has me thinking I should do that very soon.
2. I read Where the Heart Is before I saw the movie. I adored the book and later the movie. Billie Letts always introduces the most unique quirky characters.
