It forever makes me laugh when I think about the different tastes my husband and I have when it comes to books. We read a lot of the same things, but we end up appreciating it for different reasons. For example, this is a sampling of the conversation after I got Joe to read Twilight.
Me: So, did you like it?
Joe: It was ok, but I had to skip some parts. How can you possibly spend 32 pages talking about feelings?!
Me: But, that's my favorite part....
Then I might borrow one of Joe's books, like a Tom Clancy novel.
Joe: What did you think?
Me: Well, it was ok, but I had to skip some parts. How can you spend 43 pages describing military strategy?
Joe: How could you skip it? That's the best part...
I love taking Joe's reading advice, because I've found some great books that way that I would otherwise never have read. I like to think I've broadened his horizons a little bit, as well. He was my first HUNGER GAMES convert. My dad has also influenced my reading. He was actually the first person to introduce me to Tom Clancy ( I think I've read all the Jack Ryan novels) and he also got me reading Louis L'amour when I was younger.
So, do you have any members of the opposite sex who've influenced your reading habits? Do you see it as being a good thing?

My husband totally has me reading things I would normally never pick up on my own. He doesn't read "guy books" but is very into classics. I love being able to talk to him about books so often we read books together.
My honey does influence my reading habits. I wouldn't have read Paper Towns by John Green (a YA book) if it weren't for him.
He also gets me playing on the Wii and makes me watch certain TV shows. I wouldn't have known there were such shows as House or Fringe if it weren't for him.
I guess talking about TV shows is really off topic... but oh well. =)
I so wish I did, there are no males in my life that read.
How can that be?
*giggle*
You and your hubby sound like me and my hubby.
AHAHA!! My husband and I are the same way. I thought we found a mutual book in Carrie Ryan's THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH. It had zombies! So I made him read it.
Me: Did you like it?
Him: Yeah, but there could have been more zombies and less love.
ARGH!
I've read some of the Jack Ryan novels, but I got them from my dad, not my husband. My husband doesn't influence my reading much, but I do appreciate art more thanks to him.
You know, it's funny. My guy doesn't read. He doesn't have time, or like I say, he doesn't make time to read. I can't seem to date a reader... That being said, he does still influence my reading, which is weird. His thing is music and he is always pointing out books by or about musicians that I should read. I read them, too. :) Some are not that great, but others I have really enjoyed and I would not have read them otherwise...
My husband will only read the occasional sports bio and frankly, well no thanks! A really interesting dynamic is middle school boys and girls...I was amazed at how many girls talked boys into reading Twilight last year! It was funny...boys at that age are so self conscious..."I'm not going to read a GIRL book!" Okay???
It's a lot easier for me to get my husband to read nonfiction, as we have similar tastes. He reads a lot, and reads really fast. What I don't get though, is that maybe because of that, he'll read the same book sometimes three times in a row.
My dad influenced me to read more serious stuff other than the romances my sisters were reading. My brother influenced me to read YA fantasy. But my husband doesn't read, except cookbooks and food mags. I am TRYING to influence him to read other things, but no such luck. :)
Yes! It's a good thing to find out about books you normally wouldn't get right away. I get books shuffled to me from guy friends and family members. I can't say I've enjoyed all of them, but I do find a few gems! Great site by the way! I'm glad to have stumbled upon it.
