Series: Kate Daniels #5
*This review contains a few unavoidable spoilers for earlier books in the series.
Summary: Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.
So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price . . .
My thoughts: This series just keeps getting better and better.
At the beginning of MAGIC SLAYS, Kate is settling in to her new role as Consort to the Beast Lord. It comes with some significant perks, after all *wink wink*. Unfortunately, business is not so good. So when Kate gets a job, she has to take it, even though it might end up blowing up in her face. Literally.
I love the dialogue in this series. It's always pitch-perfect. Kate and Curran are always hilarious to watch together as they struggle to not beat on each other like their first impulse directs. And I loved seeing more of Andrea and Julie here as well. Andrea and Kate are the perfect duo, swapping witty zingers at the speed of light.
I read a great interview with Ilona and Gordon at Yummy Men and Kick Ass Chicks that expressed EXACTLY what it is that makes this series so gripping for me. Instead of following the typical "current case" model of detective novel, the stakes in every book are personal to Kate. I love that. It gives a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride feeling to each book, even if it does make it hard to carry the series on past a certain point without getting ridiculous.
Fortunately for Kate and Curran's fans, that point is nowhere in sight. MAGIC SLAYS is a dark and snarky tale that will hit just the right spot, guaranteed.
